Fyne Fiddles Weekend

Fyne Fiddles Course at Ardkinglas House 1-3rd December 2017

This year the course is a bit different. Not only are we launching our Book & CD Fyne Fiddles Volume 1 with a recital & a glass of fizz on the Saturday evening, there are 3 new course options for you to chose from:-

Option 1 ~ Saturday classes only (£40 with lunch & snacks)

Option 2 ~ Friday to Sunday Non-residential (£100 – all classes, events & meals*)

Option 3 ~  Friday to Sunday Residential** (£ 160 all classes, events, accommodation & meals*)

* Because of the book launch/concert the Saturday evening meal is not included in this price. A delicious meal will instead be available at very reasonable prices at the Cairndow Stagecoach Inn!

**Accommodation at Ardkinglas is limited, but there is plenty in the village within a mile of the house. Please contact us if Option 3 is fully booked and you would like us to help you find alternative accommodation.

Information

Fyne Fiddles has grown out of a musical writing, arranging & teaching partnership between Amy Geddes & Donald Knox. They met whilst working at Riddell Fiddles in the Scottish Borders and have been running Fyne Fiddles weekend courses at Ardkinglas in Argyll since 2013. The courses are open to fiddle players of most abilities (except beginners) and to people playing by ear or from sheet music. Other instruments are also very welcome – please contact us before booking to check that we can accommodate your instrument of choice.

The Tutors

Amy Geddes & Donald Knox bring bucket-loads of energy, enthusiasm, humour and a whole bunch of great ideas into their lessons and music. Donald is the yinof impeccable planning and presentation to the yang of Amy’s scatterbrained impulsive harebrained creative ideas. They make lessons fun and inspiring but are careful not to overload students with material or information. In a typical teaching weekend no more than 3 tunes will be covered, with consideration given to technique, style & musicianship and allowing ample space for discussion, reflection and exploring ideas as they surface.

The Lessons

This year we will look at an arrangement of a new piece specially selected & developed by Amy & Donald for this course. Suitable for players of most abilities there will be options to play melody, accompaniment (based on chords & rhythm) and fiddle harmony parts. Each will demand different skills & techniques.

Sessions

There will be two opportunities for informal music making & socialising – a small gathering after the buffet dinner on Friday evening and a larger event after the concert / book launch celebration on Saturday evening.

The Book & CD Launch

We are having a bit of a party to celebrate the birth of Fyne Fiddles Volume 1 – a suite of lessons taught by Amy & Donald at Ardkinglas over the last 5 years. There will be a recital of some of the music, a glass of fizz and we hope much celebrating. There’s a small £5 entry fee (except if you buy Option 2 or 3 in which case it’s free).

The Venue

Set in stunning woodland gardens, Ardkinglas House sits at the head of Loch Fyne in Argyll. It is an inspirational place to make music and all guests are welcomed into the house with open arms. There are beautiful woodl and or loch-side walks, mountains to climb, the tallest tree in Britian to admire and a great local hotel in Cairndow. We also recommend a visit to Fyne Ales and Loch Fyne Oysters before you head home. A small number of us are able to stay as guests in the house with further accommodation available at the local Inn.
